These days the touch screen technology has become one of the easiest mode of using any gadget. By just touching and dragging the screen we can perform all he functions of any gadget device. But how actually the touch screen works? We already know how to use the touch screen on smartphones, i-pods, etc but only few of them knows how it actually works. Today i will explain you the different ways on which the touch screen system works.

The touch screen system are of three kinds -

  • Resistive System.
  • Capacitive System.
  • Surface Acoustic System.

Let us understand these systems in details.

The Resistive system consists of a normal glass plate that is covered with a conductive and resistive metallic layer. These layers are seperated by a spacers and a scratch - resistant layer is placed on the top of whole setup. An electrical current runs through the two layers when the monitor is in active mode. When we touch the screen, the two layers meets with each other at the touched point. This change the electrical field and is noted and the coordinate of the touched point is noted by the sensors of the computer. When the touching coordinates are known then the special driver translates the touch into a data which can understand by the computer and gives the desired output.

The Capacitive system consists of a layer that stores electrical charge and is placed upon the glass panel. When a user touch the screen with his finger, some of the charge from the layer is transferred to the finger which decreases some charge on the layer. This decrease in charge is measured by the circuits present in the corners of the screen. The computer measures the difference of the charges at each corner and then depending on the decrease in charge the drivers acquires information and sends it to the operating system.

The Surface Acoustic Wave system consists two transducers , one for sending and one for receiving the signal.  They are placed on the 'X' and 'Y' coordinates on the screen. They are placed upon the glass reflectors. When a touch is made the sending transducers sends the signal to the receiving transducer and then the receiving transducer have the ability to locate the location of the screen and then it sends the information to the system.

From the three, the Surface Acoustic Wave system produces more bright light due to the absence of any metallic layer and hence it is often used but is of expensive in nature.
